THEME

Global Terrorism and the ‘New War’
Explosion of Ideas, Thoughts, Feelings, Reflections
Multicultural perspectives and viewpoints

In the wake of the terrorist attacks of September 11th, 2001, Brave New World seeks to provide a forum for artists to express their response to the environment we now find ourselves in. We hope to inspire an explosion of ideas, thoughts and reflections that revolve around themes of Global Terrorism, the New War, and the current state of our communities. Multicultural perspectives will be sought to add greater depth, perspective, and diversity to the program.

APPROACH

Mix of script-in-hand and off-book pieces
Less staged, more impromptu, possible improvisation
Minimal sets, costumes, and lighting

The Brave New World program will be presented in a marathon format running over 1-3 days. Such a condensed format will provide a focused and compelling presentation. The approach will provide artists with numerous opportunities to perform pieces with script-in-hand or off-book. The production will have a unified design to allow for seamless movement between plays and serve the variety of work involved.

FORMAT

Short plays (10-30 minutes), including monologues
Music, short films, and multimedia woven between the theatre pieces
Full day access to the multimedia and visual arts component in second venue
Related themed activity including discussion, music, visual arts and multimedia

Each day of the marathon will present several performance times. To expand upon the opportunities for observation and discussion, we are considering open rehearsal sessions, as appropriate. The marathon will also include discussions, music, visual arts, and multimedia presentations.

ARTISTS

Informal roll-up-sleeves and dive-in-now
Highly charged, free-wheeling, spontaneous
Premier writers, actors, directors converging/ popping in and out of the marathon

Participating artists will experience a directed and focused marathon format. The atmosphere will be highly charged and spontaneous due to the short, intense rehearsal times and the freshness of the writing. We will invite prominent actors and artists to participate for particular pieces.

AUDIENCES

Audience allowed mid-way into the artistic/creative process
Feeling: participation in the ‘beginning’ or the spark of the creative idea
Interactive - more active, less passive involvement

A primary goal of this program is to allow the audience to witness and participate in the variety of perspectives and emotions that September 11th stimulated. By creating opportunities for observation, interaction, and inclusion, we hope to spark continued creativity and debate.

MULTIMEDIA

Mechanism to unify the marathon artistically, prevent segmentation
Utilizing video as transitions between pieces
Presenting taped interviews of participating artists
Performance pieces by actors via the web or prerecorded media.
Offstage moments captured live - i.e., perspectives and insights that surface in    rehearsal or casual conversations are shared with the online audience worldwide
Articles, commentary, poetry, scripts - published on the BNW Web site
Chat and bulletin boards that allow the online audience to comment on the work

The digital world and the age of Internet connectivity have provided us with a set of unparalleled tools to speak to a global community. In many parts of the world, the post-attack experience was heavily influenced by media coverage - e.g., images of destruction and war, interviews with participants and those personally affected, and so forth. We are researching mechanisms to include multimedia presentation not only as form of artistic expression, but also as an enhancement of the daily experiences of all marathon participants.
