Brave New World on Broadway
Visit the BNW archive
Founded by Producing Artistic Director J Dakota Powell, Brave New World Theatre presented the major theatrical artistic response to the first anniversary of the September 11 terrorist attacks. Fifty new plays, songs, and multimedia pieces came together over four two-hour performances (three evenings and one matinee) from September 9 to 11, 2002 at the historic 1500-seat Town Hall in New York City.
The mission was to unite and encourage the American theatre community to explore the roots of global terrorism and address the changes in the world in the aftermath of the attacks. Brave New World provided a forum for artists to wrestle with these issues, and thereby help a ravaged city address the continuing feelings of helplessness and confusion in the face of this tragedy.
This historic event featured new works by an extraordinary group of award-winning writers including Eve Ensler (Vagina Monologues), John Patrick Shanley (Oscar, Moonstruck), John Guare (Tony, Six Degrees Of Separation), Alfred Uhry (Oscar & Pulitzer, Driving Miss Daisy), Beth Henley (Pulitzer, Crimes Of The Heart), Christopher Durang (Beyond Therapy, Sister Mary Ignatius Explains It All For You), Neil LaBute (The Shape of Things), and Lynn Nottage (Intimate Apparel, AT&T OnStage Award), among others.
Over 150 actors, directors, playwrights, composers and lyricists pooled their talent for the marathon performances, including David Strathairn, Eli Wallach, Marisa Tomei, Ethan Hawke, Alec Baldwin, Kristin Davis, Cynthia Nixon, Rosie Perez, Amanda Peet, Jason Patric, Olympia Dukakis, Jill Clayburgh, John Turturro, Paul Rudd, Liev Schreiber, Trudie Styler, Amy Irving, Sam Waterston, Neil Patrick Harris, Ann Reinking, Joel Grey, Isabella Rossellini, Edie Falco, Stanley Tucci, Elias Koteas, Bebe Neuwirth, Len Cariou, Peter Gallagher, Lorraine Bracco, Marsha Mason, Austin Pendleton and Peggy Lipton.
